3 Mistakes I Made Buying Ag Chemicals (And How to Avoid Them)

A personal account of costly errors in crop protection procurement, offering a practical checklist for farmers and distributors based on real-world experience.

The Problem: There’s No Single “Right” Way to Buy Ag Chemicals

I’ve been handling procurement for a mid-sized agricultural distributor for about six years now. My job is to order crop protection products—herbicides like atrazine and paraquat, surfactants, plant growth regulators—for a network of independent dealers. We serve row crop farmers in the Midwest, mostly corn and soybeans.

If you’re looking for a universal checklist for ordering ag chems, you won’t find one. The right approach depends entirely on what you’re buying, who you’re buying it from, and how you plan to use it. There’s no one-size-fits-all. This article lays out three common buying scenarios, mistakes I’ve made in each, and how to avoid them. I’ll also show you how to figure out which scenario applies to you.

Scenario A: You Need a Specific Brand (e.g., Syngenta) and You Know It

This was my first year, 2017. A grower needed a specific branded herbicide, syngenta's Aatrex (atrazine). They wanted 100 gallons. Simple order, right? I just went to the syngenta website to find the distributor list, called the closest one, and placed the order.

The mistake: I didn’t check the product’s shelf life or lot number before accepting delivery. The product was fine, but the barrels were from a lot that had a known sediment issue (syngenta had issued a notice on it, which I missed because I didn't check their product alerts section). We took delivery, and the guy wasted two days trying to mix it. He was furious.

What I learned:

  • Always, always check the product’s lot number and manufacturing date. You can usually find this info on syngenta msds sheets or the product label.
  • Before accepting, call the supplier’s technical rep to confirm there are no active quality advisories on that lot. It’s a 10-minute call that saves a massive headache.
  • For expensive proprietary products, the cost of the product is not the total cost. The time wasted dealing with a bad lot can easily double your labor cost.

Scenario B: You’re Comparing Generic vs. Branded (e.g., Surfactant Product)

In my third year (2019), we had a huge request for a surfactant product to be used with a generic glyphosate tank mix. The grower wanted the cheapest non-ionic surfactant (NIS) available. I found a supplier offering a price that was 35% below the next competitor. (Surprise, surprise.)

The mistake: I didn't verify that the surfactant product was actually compatible with the specific herbicide they were using. It was a classic case of causation reversal. People think that because it's cheap, it's low quality. The reality is that it was cheap because it was a non-approved formulation that could cause the herbicide to crystallize in the tank. I didn't check the label.

What I learned:

  • A surfactant product is not a commodity. The “crop oil concentrate” vs. “non-ionic surfactant” vs. “methylated seed oil” distinction matters. You can’t just swap them.
  • If you’re using a generic surfactant with a branded herbicide (like syngenta’s Touchdown), you must follow the adjuvant recommendations on the herbicide label. Not doing so voids the warranty.
  • I don’t have hard data on exact failure rates, but based on my experience, about 1 in 4 generic surfactant products will cause a compatibility issue with a major brand’s herbicide. The difference is in the formulation chemistry.

Scenario C: You’re Buying a “New” Product (e.g., Catalyst Recycling Company or Unknown Brand)

This one happened in September 2022. A new company—let’s call them a catalyst recycling company—approached us with a plant growth regulator (PGR) that was a “byproduct” of their process. It was a liquid formulation. The price was incredible. We had no existing supplier for this PGR.

The question you’re probably asking is: what is catalyst brands? In this context, catalyst isn’t a brand of PGR; it’s a type of chemical used in industrial processes. The company was recycling a spent catalyst and selling the liquid extract as an agricultural adjuvant. This is a huge red flag.

The mistake: We didn’t check if the product had an EPA registration number or a 24(c) label. We just looked at the COA (Certificate of Analysis) from their internal lab. The product didn't have a registered label from a recognized manufacturer. It wasn't a legitimate catalyst brand in the ag sense. It was an industrial waste product repurposed without proper registration.

What I learned:

  • When buying from a non-standard supplier (like a catalyst recycling company), the first thing you check is not the price. It’s the EPA registration number. Every pesticide—including plant growth regulators—must have one.
  • Ask for the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). If they can’t provide an MSDS that matches the product name exactly, walk away. Even if they claim they’re “too small” for it, it’s a non-negotiable legal requirement.
  • The total cost of buying an unregistered product includes the risk of a $10,000+ EPA fine, not just the product cost. (Which, honestly, felt excessive at the time, but the law is clear.)

How to Figure Out Which Scenario You’re In

Here’s a simple way to decide which checklist to follow:

  1. I know exactly what I need (brand, product name, EPA #). → Follow Scenario A. Focus on quality checks, lot numbers, and expiry.
  2. I’m comparing a branded product to a generic one, or I’m trying a new formulation (like a new surfactant product). → Follow Scenario B. Focus on compatibility proofs and label adherence.
  3. I’m buying from a new or unconventional source (like a catalyst recycling company) where I don’t know what a legitimate catalyst brand looks like. → Follow Scenario C. Start with registration and MSDS. Only then discuss price.

If you’re in between scenarios, err on the side of Scenario C. That’s the one where the mistakes are most costly and the salvage options are fewest.

Investing time in verifying a product's source, its label, and its compatibility isn't a cost—it's an investment in your professional reputation. A $50 difference in price per unit can cost you a client. The quality of your input defines the quality of your output. Don’t learn that lesson the hard way like I did.
