A 70% Nitric Acid SDS, Atrazine Syngenta, and the Paraquat Mass Tort: A Quality Inspector's Story

A Syngenta quality inspector explains how a 70% nitric acid SDS, an atrazine Syngenta label, and a paraquat mass tort discovery request changed the way he thinks about chemical safety.

It was June 2021, 8:40 AM, when a pale yellow folder landed on my desk with a Post-it note that said URGENT—SDS correction. Inside was the 70% nitric acid SDS from one of our raw material suppliers. Nothing about it looked special. Another correction. Another signature. But that folder is the reason I now read every document as if it might end up in front of a jury. Because it might.

I'm a quality and compliance manager for crop protection products at Syngenta. I review labels, batch records, and safety data sheets before they ship—roughly 400 unique documents a year. I almost approved it. The supplier was waiting. The deadline was that afternoon. The material was already in a warehouse, ready to move. I had the signature screen open and my coffee going cold.

The upside was a quick approval. The risk was a plant employee relying on an incorrect exposure limit for a chemical that can cause serious burns. I kept asking myself: is saving 10 minutes worth potentially sending a bad SDS to a plant where people handle corrosive acid? The expected value said send it back. But the downside of approving was too big to justify the convenience.

I rejected it. The supplier reissued the SDS the next morning. The correction cost them one day. The original error would have cost somebody a lot more than that. 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. Period.

That close call is when I started building a 12-point SDS checklist. Since then, that checklist has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework, and I think that's conservative. It catches wrong exposure limits, missing transport classifications, and label discrepancies. Every item has a story. Some of those stories are mine. Atrazine, Paraquat, and the Documents That Follow You

A few months into the job, I sat in a room with our regulatory team discussing an atrazine Syngenta label update. Atrazine is one of the most studied herbicides in agriculture. The training materials tell applicators to use closed systems. Whether that was enough at different points in time is not my call. It's a court's call.

Maybe for a job. Maybe for a lawyer. Maybe because they're scared. The least I can do is make our documents accurate enough that the answer doesn't come from a typo.

Prevention Is the Cheapest Insurance

If you ask me, the highest-leverage safety improvement in this industry is not a new molecule. It is a verification habit. I don't believe any chemical company can promise zero risk. Anyone who does is lying or selling something. What a company can do is make sure that every warning is visible, every number is verified, and every change is traceable.

Good documentation. That's it.

I think about that folder from June 2021 a lot. The 70% nitric acid SDS taught me more than any training session ever did. It taught me that prevention beats correction, and that the cost of checking is almost always smaller than the cost of explaining later.

The surprise wasn't that the supplier made a mistake. The surprise was how easily I almost repeated it. I thought I was too careful. I wasn't. I'm still not. That's why I use a checklist.
