There’s no one-size-fits-all answer in modern agriculture

If you’re a farmer or an agronomist looking at Syngenta’s portfolio, you’ve probably noticed it’s huge. Herbicides, fungicides, plant growth regulators, digital platforms, and now a big push around regenerative agriculture. It can feel overwhelming.

But here’s the thing: the right choice depends entirely on your specific situation. There’s no perfect product. The best option for a large-scale corn farmer in Iowa is going to be completely different from what works for a specialty crop grower in California or a mixed farm in Brazil.

Let’s break this down into three common scenarios. I’ll walk you through what I’ve seen work—and what I’ve seen fail—so you can find your lane.

Scenario 1: The high-volume conventional operator

You’re producing corn, soy, or wheat on thousands of acres. Your margin is tight, and every minute of labor counts. You need something that works fast, reliably, and at scale.

For this situation, I’ve found that sticking with proven chemistries like atrazine and paraquat is still the most cost-effective route—despite all the talk about newer, “safer” alternatives. In my experience managing weed resistance programs for a 5,000-acre client in Nebraska, we tried a new post-emergent herbicide cocktail one season. It cost 40% more per acre and required two extra passes. We ended up with grass escapes in 15% of the field. I still kick myself for that one.

What I’ve found works:

This is where Syngenta’s regenerative agriculture push really shines—but only if you do it right. I’ve worked with a group of growers in Ohio who tried to go “no-synthetic” for a season. They bought into the hype without planning. Their yields dropped 30% because they didn’t have a plan for late-season weed pressure. They went bankrupt on that field.

What to do:

  • For immediate grass control: Gramoxone (paraquat) is still the fastest-acting non-selective option—but only if it’s legal in your state. The EPA has been tightening restrictions, so check your local regulations.
  • For broadleaves: Atrazine is cheap and effective, but you can’t use it on anything that’s been treated with a Group 9 herbicide recently.
  • Consider a quick-turnaround custom mix from your supplier. I’ve seen farmers panic-buy premixes and pay twice the cost for something that doesn’t match their weed spectrum.

The downside of reactive control? You’re always behind the curve. You’ll pay 50-100% more for emergency delivery, and you risk developing resistant populations if you keep using the same modes of action.

How to figure out which scenario fits you

Most farmers I work with don’t fit neatly into one category. Here’s a quick self-check:

  • If you have more than 1,000 acres of row crops and a standard rotation: You’re probably Scenario 1. Focus on cost efficiency and large-scale reliability.
  • If you’re already using cover crops, no-till, or have a carbon credit contract: You’re Scenario 2. Invest in selective products and biologicals, but keep a backup plan.
  • If you’re constantly fighting resistant weeds or dealing with supply chain delays: You’re Scenario 3. Build a relationship with a distributor who can do rush orders. And seriously, get a soil test and a resistance audit.

The worst mistake I see? Farmers who try to be Scenario 2 but buy product like Scenario 1. They end up with a mismatched portfolio that costs more and works less.

One more thing about paraquat

I get asked this constantly: Is paraquat legal? The short answer is yes, for now—but with significant restrictions. As of 2025, the EPA has re-approved paraquat for agricultural use but requires additional safety measures, including closed-system mixing and certified applicator training. Some states (like California and New York) have gone further and restricted or banned it entirely.

If you’re outside the US: The situation varies. The EU banned it in 2007. Brazil allows it with restrictions. Check your local regulatory body before buying.

My advice: if you’re in a state where it’s legal, use it carefully and only when you really need it. But don’t rely on it long-term—the regulatory landscape is shifting.

Syngenta has a product for every scenario. But the best product in the world won’t fix a bad plan. Take the time to figure out what type of operation you’re running, and then match your strategy to the situation.
