The problem with comparing a chemical to a platform

It's tempting to think you can just compare products like Atrazine—a pre-emergent herbicide—with a tool like Cropwise. But that's the oversimplification that gets growers in trouble. One's a chemical applied to the ground; the other's a digital ecosystem. It's like comparing a wrench to a workshop.

Most buyers focus on per-gallon pricing for the chemical and the monthly subscription for the software. They completely miss the total cost of thinking—time, risk, and missed opportunities that don't show up on a spreadsheet. In my role coordinating emergency field trials for a mid-size ag retailer, I've watched farmers make decisions based on a single price tag. And I've watched them pay for it.

Platform (Cropwise): Year one: marginal improvement. You learn to use it. Year three: you're spot-spraying based on NDVI maps, cutting chemical costs by 15-20%. Year five: you've built a database of historic field performance. That's the value—the compounding effect of data.

The question everyone asks is 'which one costs less per acre?' The question they should ask is 'which one saves me from making the same mistake next year?'

So, what's the actual answer?

Alright, I'm gonna be blunt: If you're a small grower with less than 200 acres and simple weed pressure, stick with the Atrazine. It's cheap, it works, and you don't need a data subscription. But if you're managing 500+ acres, dealing with resistance, or facing a labor shortage (which is everyone, right now), the Cropwise platform will pay for itself within two seasons.
