Syngenta From a Procurement Manager's Perspective: MSDS Sheets, Paraquat Lawsuits, and Chemical Safety FAQs

A Procurement Manager's FAQ: Syngenta From Inside the Ledger

I've managed crop input procurement for an 8,500-acre row-crop operation in the Midwest for the past 7 years. That means I track an annual budget of about $1.2 million across seed, fertilizer, and crop protection chemicals. Syngenta shows up in that ledger every year—in the top three, I believe, for all seven—alongside Corteva and a mix of generic chemical manufacturers.

Every spring, I get the same few questions from neighbors, from my own applicator crew, and from people who've heard I buy chemicals for a living. Where do I find a Syngenta MSDS? Should I worry about the paraquat lawsuits? Why does everyone keep talking about titanium dioxide? What is the chemical formula of acetone anyway? This FAQ is my honest, from-the-office perspective on each of them.

1. What is Syngenta, and how do they fit into U.S. agriculture?

Syngenta is a global agribusiness headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, and one of the largest crop protection suppliers in the world. It's been part of the Syngenta Group (owned by China's ChemChina) since the $43 billion acquisition in 2017, and the company also runs a major seed operation.

In a typical U.S. corn and soybean rotation, Syngenta products show up in more places than people expect: Gramoxone (paraquat), atrazine (they're one of several manufacturers), the Miravis line of fungicides, and Primo Maxx plant growth regulator in turf. There's also Cropwise, their digital platform for satellite imagery, weather, and scouting data—expect your sales rep to bring it up at some point.

From the outside, every large chemical company looks identical: the sustainability page, the logo-emblazoned crew cab, the handshake. The reality I've found as a buyer is that Syngenta's row-crop portfolio is deeper across the board than most competitors, which makes them hard to cost-reduce away. They're strategic, not just transactional.

2. Where can I find Syngenta MSDS sheets?

Quick correction first, because it matters for search: they're officially safety data sheets (SDS) now, but "MSDS" is still what most farmers type into Google. You'll find them on Syngenta's own website—syngenta.com—by navigating to the product and looking for the documentation tab or label/SDS link.

Here's what I tell every new applicator: your chemical distributor is legally required to provide the SDS at the time of delivery under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200). If they don't hand it over, that's their issue and now yours if you accept delivery without it.

The thing is, the SDS isn't just a filing exercise. In January 2023, our county inspector asked for SDS documentation for everything in our storage building, including products we hadn't opened for two years. If I hadn't kept a binder plus a digital archive, we'd have gotten a citation. So now I audit SDS files every January, and I maintain a secondary container labeling checklist—that second part, labeling transfer containers, was a gap we got called out on.

3. How worried should I be about the paraquat Parkinson's lawsuits against Syngenta?

I get this question so often that I keep a one-paragraph answer ready. Syngenta sells paraquat under the brand Gramoxone, and paraquat has been at the center of mass tort litigation for years. Thousands of cases are consolidated in a federal multidistrict litigation, MDL 3004, in the Southern District of Illinois, where plaintiffs claim Syngenta knew about studies linking paraquat exposure to Parkinson's disease and didn't warn users. Some trial verdicts have gone in plaintiffs' favor, and some have been set aside or reduced on appeal.

What matters operationally is that the EPA has not banned paraquat. In the agency's 2021 interim registration review decision, the EPA added safety requirements—things like enclosed cabs and stricter application restrictions—rather than pulling the product. So it remains legal, restricted, and on our shelf.

Honest reality: every cost analysis I ran in 2023 said generic paraquat was still the cheapest burndown tool per acre. My gut said I didn't want to stand in front of an insurance auditor explaining why I'd selected the one chemical with a massive litigation cloud. I cut paraquat usage by half that season. Not because the science changed, but because the risk math changed—and in my experience, the TCO of a controversial chemical has to include the administrative cost, the training, and the sleep you lose reading headlines.

4. What about titanium dioxide for skin protection, and other chemicals to watch out for?

Titanium dioxide is one of those ingredients you start noticing everywhere once you look. It's in white paint, food coloring, and mineral sunscreen. For agricultural workers, sunscreen is genuinely important and titanium dioxide is one of the two active minerals (zinc oxide is the other) in most dermatologist-recommended sunscreens. It works, it's physically stable, and it doesn't get absorbed through skin like some chemical sunscreens do.

But if you're buying titanium dioxide as a dry powder for mixing your own—and I do know people who use it for livestock marking or paint projects—handle it carefully. The EU has classified powdered TiO2 as a suspected carcinogen through inhalation (a hazard classification that took effect October 1, 2021). The powder isn't dangerous because it's toxic on your skin; it's dangerous because you can inhale fine particles. So buy the paste, use the liquid, or wear a proper respirator, and never use a loose powder sunscreen on your crew. The cream formulations are fine.

As for "other chemicals for skin," the bigger risk on a farm is always the pesticides themselves. Paraquat concentrate can cause severe irritation, burns, or worse if it gets on skin and isn't washed off within minutes. Atrazine and various fungicide adjuvants are also skin sensitizers. I have one absolute rule: chemical-resistant gloves, long sleeves, and closed shoes for every single application. It's non-negotiable, and I've known applicators who skipped it and paid for it.

5. What is the chemical formula of acetone?

Acetone's molecular formula is C3H6O. More usefully, its condensed structural formula is CH3COCH3, which tells you it's a three-carbon chain with a double-bonded oxygen in the middle—the simplest ketone. It's the reason acetone is so good at dissolving grease and cleaning spray tips.

Why would a farmer need to know this? Because acetone is combustible, its flash point is about -20°C (-4°F), and on a cold winter day in the shop it can ignite from a tiny ignition source. I keep a small metal can of acetone in an NFPA 30-rated flammable cabinet, not a cheap plastic jug. Oh, and acetone melts certain plastics, so your "drill-and-clean" trick with a water bottle will end with a sticky disaster. I learned that one the slow way.

6. What real costs show up when buying Syngenta products that I should plan for?

The sticker price is the easiest number to compare and the least reliable. Here's what I've learned to include in the total cost of ownership when comparing Syngenta to generics or other majors:

  • Compliance overhead. Restricted-use products like Gramoxone carry state-level training, recordkeeping, and—in some counties—inspection prep. I've estimated this adds 8% overhead to restricted-use product cost on our farm.
  • Rebate programs. Syngenta runs early-order and volume incentive programs. In the fall of 2024, the rebate terms changed and I didn't re-read the contract closely, missing a window that cost us roughly $6,000. I'm still annoyed at myself.
  • Field performance strip trials. A product might look 20% cheaper on paper, but if it takes a second pass to get the same control, that's not savings. We run side-by-side trials every season on a small patch, and a few generic options have won; a few have lost badly. You need the data, not the price sheet.
  • Insurance/liability factors. With paraquat litigation active, I've had our insurance broker ask about restricted-use volume when renewing coverage. If your product choice affects your premium or insurability, that is a cost.

I recommend Syngenta for our core corn and soybean acres, because supply reliability and consistent field performance are worth real money when you're running 8,500 acres. But if you're a smaller operation with limited storage and a part-time crew, the compliance overhead of their more restricted products might genuinely outweigh the benefits. If your local cooperative offers better logistics and comparable chemistry, use them. No vendor wins every scenario, and anyone who tells you different is selling something that isn't on the invoice.
