A Farmer's Emergency Checklist for Syngenta Crop Protection Products: What to Do When Things Go Wrong

A practical, step-by-step checklist for handling spills, exposure, and other emergencies involving Syngenta herbicides and chemicals. Written from the perspective of a veteran emergency specialist with 10+ years in agricultural safety.

When You Need This Checklist

This is for the moment a sprayer hose bursts, a container tips over, or someone gets a face full of drift. Not the routine stuff — the kind of call that makes you drop everything. I've handled over 200 emergency incidents in my 10 years coordinating safety for an ag chemical distributor, and basically every one followed the same pattern: panic, confusion, then action. This checklist cuts to the action.

It's designed for anyone using Syngenta crop protection products — atrazine, paraquat, paraquat dichloride, plant growth regulators, whatever. The products change, but the emergency response stays the same. Five steps. Do them in order.

Step 1: Assess & Secure – Stop the Worst First

Your first instinct might be to grab a hose or run for a phone. Don't. Stop and look. In my first year, I made the classic rookie mistake: I rushed to clean a spill without checking the wind direction. Cost me a face full of vapor and a day in the ER.

Seriously, take 10 seconds to:

  • Identify the product. Check the container label. If it's paraquat (created back in 1962, but still widely used), you're dealing with a Class I herbicide – highly toxic.
  • Check for injured people. Anyone coughing, eyes burning, or unconscious? Move them upwind first if it's safe.
  • Stop the source. If it's a leaking drum, tip it upright or put it inside a secondary containment.
  • Evacuate non-essential people. Keep at least 50 feet away for small spills, 300 feet for large ones.

If you can't identify the product, treat it as the most dangerous thing you can imagine. That's not being dramatic — it's being safe.

Step 2: Grab the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) – and Read the NFPA 704

Every Syngenta product has an SDS on the official website (syngenta.com or syngentacropprotection.com). You should already have these printed in a binder near your mixing area. If you don't, that's a process gap I see at nearly every farm. I once responded to a call where the farmer had no SDS and had to use his phone to look up the PDF — that's 5 minutes of delay that could kill.

On the SDS, find the NFPA 704 diamond. It's the colored square with numbers 0–4. For example, sodium hydroxide (which some ag formulations use as a pH adjuster) typically has a health rating of 3, flammability of 0, and reactivity of 1. That tells you immediately: this stuff corrodes skin, won't burn, but might react with water. Know what you're dealing with before you touch anything.

The SDS also lists first aid procedures. Write down the poison control number before you call. (If I remember correctly, the national number is 1-800-222-1222, though I might be mixing it up with another line — check your SDS.)

Step 3: Decontaminate & Administer First Aid

If someone has been exposed, time is your enemy. For skin contact: remove contaminated clothing (cut it off if needed) and rinse with cool water for at least 15 minutes. Don't use hot water — it opens pores and increases absorption (learned that one the hard way when a worker's rash got way worse). For eyes: flush continuously with clean water or saline for 20 minutes. Hold the eyelid open. For inhalation: move to fresh air immediately; if they're not breathing, start CPR.

For spills on the ground or floor:

  • If it's a liquid (like most herbicides including atrazine and paraquat), use absorbent pads or kitty litter to soak it up. Sweep it into a plastic bag.
  • If it's a powder (some dry formulations), wet it down to avoid airborne dust — but be careful, some powders react with water (check the SDS reactivity section).
  • Then wash the area with a detergent solution and triple rinse with water. Collect all waste and contaminated PPE for disposal.

Never ever try to neutralize a chemical spill with household products. That's a mistake I see beginners make. The sulfur-containing product of oxidation from some organophosphates can create toxic fumes when mixed with bleach. Leave neutralization to the hazmat team.

Step 4: Call the Professionals – Know Your Boundaries

Here's where the 'professional has boundaries' rule kicks in. You are the first responder, not the doctor or toxicologist. After you've done the basics, call:

  1. Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) for human exposure.
  2. Local emergency services if there's fire, large spill, or serious injuries.
  3. Syngenta's emergency phone line (listed on the product label and SDS). They can provide specific product information and, in some cases, arrange containment support.

Once, we had a farmer who spent 2 hours trying to clean up a paraquat spill himself because he didn't want to 'bother' anyone. The vendor who finally told him 'this isn't our strength — here's who does it better' earned my trust for everything else. Syngenta's job is making great crop protection products; emergency response is for trained hazmat crews and medical pros. Don't be the hero who tries to handle a chemical exposure alone.

Step 5: Document & Report

After the immediate danger is handled, write down everything: what product, how much spilled, who was affected, what actions you took, and the time each step happened. This becomes crucial for insurance claims, regulatory reporting, and improving your farm's safety procedures. Syngenta's product stewardship team also wants to know — they track incidents to improve labeling and training (really, they do).

Upload a copy of your report to the Syngenta crop protection portal if you have access, or email it to your local distributor. Even if everything went smoothly, a written record helps you remember what went wrong and how to prevent it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring PPE because the spill is 'small.' A splash of atrazine on your skin might not burn right away, but it's still harmful. Wear nitrile gloves, goggles, and a chemical-resistant apron. Period.
  • Forgetting to ventilate indoor storage areas. Vapors from some products (like those containing sulfur) can build up and ignite. NFPA 704 ratings often include flammability, but even a 0 rating doesn't mean zero risk in a confined space.
  • Using a shovel or broom on a liquid spill. You'll only spread it further. Absorb first, then dispose.
  • Not having your emergency kit stocked. I show up at farms and find empty absorbent pouches or expired eyewash bottles. Stock up quarterly. Note to self: I should really set recurring calendar reminders for that.
