Syngenta vs. The Reality Check: What a Paraquat User Learned About Digital Ag

An honest, experience-based look at Syngenta, from paraquat and atrazine to the Cropwise platform. We compare the old-school chemical mindset with the new reality of digital agriculture, drawing on real mistakes and lessons learned in Brazil and beyond.

Two Worlds, One Company: Why My View on Syngenta Had to Change

For the first five years of my career as a crop advisor in Mato Grosso, Brazil, my relationship with Syngenta was pretty simple. I ordered paraquat, I ordered atrazine, and I told growers which rates to apply. It was a transactional relationship. Their product list was my toolbox, and I thought I knew it all.

I was wrong. What I mean is, I was looking at the wrong part of the picture. I was focused on the chemicals (the tools) and completely missing the farm management system (the strategy). The big shift for me started in mid-2022, when a mismanaged herbicide application on a 2,000-hectare soybean farm cost my client roughly $18,000 in lost yield potential. I admit it: I was a skeptic of digital agriculture platforms for years. I rolled my eyes when vendors showed me iPads. “I don't need an app to tell me a field has weeds,” I thought. “I have eyes.”

Skipped the digital training because I thought it “doesn't matter for field work.” That was the one time it mattered. When I finally sat down with Strider in 2023, I realized it wasn't about telling me what I could see—it was about telling me what I couldn't. It tracks scouting routes, creates heat maps of weed resistance, and predicts weed emergence based on weather data.

Old School View: Trust your eyes and your experience. Digital tools are for office managers, not for agronomists in the field. They're expensive and complicated.

New Reality: Your eyes are excellent for the present. They are terrible for the past (which you forgot) and the future (which you haven't seen yet). Cropwise/Strider acts as a memory and a forecasting tool. I used it to change my recommendation for a client, avoiding a late application of a plant growth regulator that would have hurt yields. To be fair, the old skepticism had a point. Not every digital platform delivers. Some are just dashboards with confusing UI. It's not a separate tech project; it's an extension of the chemistry.

Dimension 3: Safety & Regulation (Pragmatism vs. Proactivity)

This is a dimension that has genuinely changed in the last 5 years. Paraquat syngenta is a classic example. It's a powerful, non-selective herbicide that has been under intense regulatory scrutiny (bans in China, EU restrictions, ongoing EPA review in the US). The old conversation: “Is it legal? Okay, we use it.”

The new reality: Even where it's legal, are you using it responsibly? And what's your backup plan?

Old School View: We use what works until the government tells us to stop. Safety is about wearing PPE and not spraying in the wind. Regulatory changes are slow; we'll deal with them when they come.

New Reality: Clients are asking proactive questions. I've had three growers in the past year ask me about alternatives to paraquat, not because of a ban, but because of supply chain concerns and export market pressures (some international buyers won't touch produce grown with it). This is where Syngenta's product breadth matters. They have alternative modes of action. They also have guidance on how to transition.

I remember a mistake from 2020. I assumed that since a client bought the same product for 5 years, he didn't want to change. Didn't verify. Turned out he was worried about the regulatory landscape but didn't know how to switch. I looked lazy for not bringing it up. That cost me credibility.

The winners here are the advisors who can talk about the stewardship of the product, not just the chemistry. This is what syngenta as a brand pushes hard. Their Redefining Sustainability award in 2025 wasn't for a flashy new chemical; it was for their global digital agriculture platform that helps growers reduce usage while maintaining efficacy. The product is the same (paraquat, atrazine). The application of it—guided by data—changes the risk profile.

Which Path Should You Take?

So, Syngenta vs. Reality Check: who wins? The answer, as always, is “it depends.” But I can tell you what works based on the mistakes I've documented.

Choose the “Old School” path (pure chemical focus) if:

  • Your operation is small enough that you can visually track every field every day.
  • You have zero interest in digital tools and don't have a team member to handle them.
  • You operate in a market where regulatory pressure is minimal and will stay that way for the next 3-5 years.
  • You are exceptionally disciplined with paper records (and never forget to check them).

Choose the “New Reality” path (integrated chemical + data) if:

  • You manage more than 500 hectares, or manage multiple client farms.
  • You want to defend your recommendations to clients with hard data (not just “because I've done this for 10 years”).
  • You're concerned about regulatory shifts and need to show due diligence.
  • You're tired of making planning mistakes due to forgotten information.

For me, the decision became clear after the $18,000 mistake. I now use Cropwise for at least three of my five biggest clients. I still buy the same paraquat and atrazine from the same distributor. The difference is how I buy it—I buy it with a plan generated by the platform. It feels redundant to say it, but: the tool changes how you use the tool [this being the chemical]. That's the evolution.

One last thing: Don't assume that embracing digital means abandoning experience. The best agronomists I know in Brazil (using Strider) are the ones who have been in the field for 20+ years. They use the platform to validate their gut feeling, not to replace it. They're still the first ones to spot a problem in a crop, but now they have the data to prove it to the grower.

That's the real mature approach: Use the data to make your experience scalable. That's what I wish I had understood back in 2022.
